Te Houtaewa Waka Ama Surf Challenge
The 11th Annual Waka Ama Surf Challenge
will take place on 90 Mile Beach on the 20th March 2010. Races of one, two and
three thousand metres will be held, each with a Le Mans
Start/Finish in the surf.
Teams from throughout Northland and the upper
North Island
will be participating. This event is run with the sanction of Tai Tokerau Waka Association and its popularity has led to a limit of 12 Men’s and 12 Women’s Teams being placed on it. It is the only Waka Ama race held
in the surf in New Zealand with the added degree of difficulty of having to turn the Waka in the surf.
In 2006 the World Waka Ama
Championships were held in New Zealand on Lake Karapiro, and we were
fortunate to then host 2 of the Hawaiian teams here in the Far North
to compete against our local teams.
Entries will be accepted up to 20th March 2010. There is no Late Entry Fee.
